Shopify collection SEO without duplicate URL chaos

Fix filtered collections, /collections/all, and thin hubs so category pages rank and pass authority to products.

Why Shopify creates duplicate collection URLs

Filters, sort parameters, and automated tag collections multiply URLs for the same products. /collections/all often competes with the category hubs you actually want to rank.

Google indexes duplicates. Crawl budget fragments. None of your collection pages earn enough authority to rank.

Symptoms store owners recognise

Search Console shows hundreds of collection URLs with the same title. Category pages never rank despite strong products. Only the homepage and a few bestsellers appear in Google.

  • Filter URLs indexed. Size, colour, and material facets creating near-duplicate pages.
  • Thin hub pages. Grids with no intro copy, schema, or internal links to money products.
  • Tag collection overlap. Automated rules creating competing hubs for the same SKUs.

How we fix it

Crawl duplicate clusters first. Group URLs by similarity and index status. Then control what Google should index.

  • Canonical and noindex rules. Facets and sorted views controlled at template level.
  • Hub page copy. Unique intros on money collections with schema and internal links.
  • Pagination and filters. Clean handling so page two does not create a duplicate hub.

Does duplicate content cause a penalty?

Usually no manual penalty. The damage is dilution: Google picks one weak URL or none. Fixing indexation often lifts the whole catalogue without new blog posts.
