Shopify Core Web Vitals: speed, rankings, and orders

David Johnson on why mobile PageSpeed scores block add-to-cart on Shopify, and what we fix in sprint one before content churn.

CWV is a revenue metric on Shopify

PageSpeed scores are not vanity. On mobile, hero images, review apps, and personalisation scripts stack on every template. People bounce before add to cart.

Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal. Slow stores lose twice: fewer rankings and fewer conversions from the traffic they still get.

What we see on image-heavy stores

Reclaimed and home stores often fail LCP on product pages. Subscription brands load checkout widgets globally, even on blog and collection pages.

  • Unoptimised hero images. Full-size uploads on PDPs and collection banners.
  • App script weight. Reviews, chat, and upsell apps on every template.
  • Theme regressions. A redesign that looked better but loaded slower.

Sprint one fixes before content projects

We run a free store speed check first: mobile and desktop PageSpeed plus homepage on-page snapshot. Then we fix template-level blockers.

Image delivery, lazy loading rules, deferring non-critical scripts, and removing apps from templates that do not need them. One template fix lifts every SKU on that layout.

Measure orders, not just green scores

A perfect Lighthouse score that does not move add-to-cart rate is a failed project. We report speed alongside organic sessions and conversion on your highest-traffic URLs.
