An Ecommerce Category Page Brief Beyond a Word Count

· Managing Director

A category page should help shoppers understand a range and choose where to go next. Brief the products, distinctions and buying questions before choosing a word count. Adding several hundred generic words below a grid does not resolve a range that is unclear or impossible to browse.

The brief needs a commercial owner who knows the stock and a content owner who can turn that knowledge into a usable page. Search data helps identify the language and demand; it cannot confirm which products are genuinely suitable for a particular use.

Give the page one clear job

Write a sentence describing what belongs in the category and what does not. Include the buyer’s likely task. For example, a category for compact desks is about comparing space-conscious options, while an individual model page supplies the exact dimensions and specification of one item.

Check the existing pages before creating another category for a slightly different phrase. If two pages offer the same products and answer the same need, investigate whether they should be one useful destination. Distinct wording alone does not establish a distinct purpose.

Build the brief around decisions

Brief field What to supply
Range boundary The products included and any important exclusions
Main distinctions Size, material, compatibility or use, where relevant
Evidence Verified product facts and genuine customer questions
Next steps Useful subcategories, products and supporting advice
Maintenance owner Who updates the page when the range changes

Use only distinctions that apply to the actual catalogue. Do not add filters or buying claims because a competitor has them if your range does not support those choices. Record uncertainties for the product owner instead of filling the gaps with plausible copy.

Keep browsing central

Explain the range briefly before asking the reader to navigate it. Make the product selection and relevant subcategories easy to find. Longer advice can follow the browsing area when that suits the template, but the layout should answer a shopper’s immediate question rather than enforce an SEO paragraph ritual.

Google’s ecommerce site-structure guidance recommends navigable links between categories, subcategories and products. A search box alone is not an adequate substitute for a route through the catalogue.

Put detail on the right page

Keep precise specifications, variant choices and purchase details on the relevant product pages. For trade catalogues that also means case quantities, pack sizes and minimum orders, which our page on SEO for wholesalers and retailers covers in more detail. Use the category to explain differences across the range. A detailed installation tutorial or comparison may deserve a supporting guide when it answers a separate task.

Link to that guide in context and provide a route back to the range. Do not repeat the same full article across every category. Our internal linking audit explains how to check the connection between useful advice and commercial pages.

A team working through a plan together

Review search intent without copying the results

Look at relevant search results and note the types of pages shown: categories, products, guides or mixed results. Then inspect what those pages help people do. This informs the brief; it does not justify copying their headings or treating one snapshot as a permanent ranking order.

Record the query, country, device and review date. Separate observed gaps from assumptions. A competitor’s lengthy copy is not proof that length caused its position, and an attractive grid is not proof that the underlying range matches yours.

Define acceptance before writing

Approve the page when the range is accurate, the differences are useful, products can be reached and the copy answers real selection questions. Check title, heading, canonical, indexability and links in the rendered page. Then measure the category’s search performance and commercial use over a suitable period.

The result should be a maintained shopping destination. If the catalogue changes, the content needs another look too. Use the ecommerce SEO overview to connect category work to the rest of the store.

On WooCommerce, category copy goes in the description field covered in our WooCommerce SEO checklist. On BigCommerce, it is check nine in our BigCommerce SEO audit.
