Shopify product page SEO

A Shopify product page has two jobs. It has to be found by someone who already knows roughly what they want, and it has to give them enough to buy. Shopify product page SEO covers both, because the things search engines look for on a product page, such as a clear product title, a description that is not copied from the manufacturer, real images with alt text, reviews and accurate product details, are the same things a shopper is looking for. Most Shopify stores have the template and none of the content.

Where this fits in your campaign

Product searches are late and specific: a brand and model, a product name with a size or colour, a part number. Volumes per product are small, but intent is as high as it gets and across a catalogue it adds up. Product pages also feed Google Shopping and the product results that now appear in ordinary search, which is where product schema earns its keep.

01

Optimise the fifty products that carry the revenue, not all five thousand

On most stores a small share of products produces most of the sales. Those get hand-written descriptions, proper images and individual keyword targets. The long tail gets a good template and accurate data. Trying to hand-optimise every product page is how this work never gets finished.

02

The manufacturer’s description is on every other retailer’s site too

If your product description is the supplier’s paragraph, your page is a duplicate of dozens of others and search engines have no reason to prefer it. Rewriting it around what your customers ask is the single most reliable product page optimisation there is.

What is Shopify product page SEO?

It is the on-page SEO, technical SEO and content work that helps individual product pages appear in search engine results and convert the visitors they get. On Shopify the technical foundations come with the platform, so most of the work is content and data: what the product is called, how it is described, what the images show, and what the structured data tells Google.

It sits alongside collection page SEO, which targets the broader category searches. Collections bring in people who are choosing. Product pages catch people who have chosen. A store needs both, and the two should link to each other.

The product page elements that matter, in order

This is the checklist we use when we optimise a product page on a Shopify store.

  • 01

    Product title

Brand, product name, and the attribute people search with: "Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX Men’s Walking Shoe". The product title becomes the H1 and, by default, the page title, so it does more work than any other field.

  • 02

    Page title and meta description

Edited in the "Search engine listing" box in the Shopify admin. Put the target keyword first in the page title and keep it under about sixty characters. Use the meta description for price, delivery or a guarantee, because those earn the click.

  • 03

    Product description

Written for the person deciding, not pasted from the supplier. Who it is for, what it is like to use, sizing or compatibility, what is in the box, care. Use keywords where they fall naturally. A description that answers the questions your customer service team gets is already optimised.

  • 04

    Product images and alt text

Several real images, compressed, with descriptive file names and alt text that says what the image shows. Alt text is an accessibility feature first. Written honestly, it also helps search engines understand the product and brings image search traffic.

  • 05

    Product details and specifications

Dimensions, materials, compatibility and model numbers as text on the page, ideally in a table. These are what long-tail product searches match against, and they are frequently locked inside an image or a PDF.

  • 06

    Product reviews

Genuine reviews add fresh, unique text to the page in the customer’s own words, and with correct markup they can show star ratings in search results. Check the review app outputs schema once, not twice alongside the theme.

  • 07

    Internal linking

Breadcrumbs back to the collection, links to related products and to any relevant guide. A product only reachable through page nine of a collection is effectively hidden.

Product schema on Shopify

Structured data is how a product page tells Google its price, availability, brand, identifiers and review rating in a form it can rely on. Most modern Shopify themes output Product schema, but "outputs schema" and "outputs correct schema" are different things. We routinely find missing brand and GTIN fields, prices that do not update with the selected variant, and two conflicting blocks because a review app added its own.

It matters more than it used to. Product rich results, free Google Shopping listings and the product panels in AI-generated answers all draw on this data and on your Merchant Center feed. A page with clean product schema and a matching feed is eligible for all of them. One with errors is eligible for none. We test every product template with Google’s Rich Results Test and watch the Merchant listings report in Search Console afterwards.

Variants, duplicate URLs and out-of-stock products

Shopify creates more than one URL for the same product. It is reachable at /products/handle and also at /collections/name/products/handle, and each variant adds a ?variant= parameter. Shopify sets the canonical tag to the main product URL, which is correct. The problem comes from themes that link to the collection-scoped version internally, so your own site sends its links to the non-canonical address. It is a one-line theme fix and worth checking on every store.

Variants are a judgement call. Colours and sizes of one product belong on one page. Where a variant is something people search for in its own right, such as a specific colourway of a trainer, a separate product can be justified, provided it has its own content.

Out-of-stock products should stay live if they are coming back: keep the page, mark it unavailable, and offer a back-in-stock alert. Permanently discontinued products with rankings or links should be redirected to the closest replacement or the parent collection. Deleting them and leaving a 404 throws away whatever they had earned.

Product page speed

Product pages are usually the heaviest pages on a Shopify store: large images, a gallery script, reviews, upsells, size guides, payment buttons and whatever else has been installed over the years. Page load time affects both ranking and conversion, and on product pages the conversion effect is the bigger one.

The work is unglamorous. Correctly sized images, lazy loading below the fold, and an audit of which Shopify apps are genuinely earning their place on the product template. Uninstalled apps often leave code behind in the theme, so we check the rendered page, not the app list. The wider version of this is covered under Shopify SEO.

How we work on product pages, and what it costs

We use Google Search Console and sales data to pick the products that matter, fix the template once so every product benefits, then rewrite the priority products individually. Progress is reported against organic traffic and revenue to product URLs, not a count of pages edited.

Product work is part of the E-Commerce package at £1,497 a month plus VAT. For a small catalogue, Local at £497 a month is often enough. If you are not sure which your store is, the free audit will tell you, and it looks at your real product pages. For proof that this approach sells, see how Used UPVC Windows and Doors took £81,505 in three months from organic-led ecommerce.

How SEO works here

Four steps, then round again

SEO never finishes. The work runs on a loop, and you see the report every time round, good month or bad.

  1. Step 1

    Keyword research

We start with the terms that show buying intent, not the ones with the biggest numbers. Alongside those, lower-competition terms that rank sooner and bring early results.

  2. Step 2

    Competitor analysis

Then we look at who outranks you and why. Once we know what they are doing, we know what it takes to beat it.

  3. Step 3

    Implementation

The team does the work: on-page fixes, new content, links and local signals. Every item is listed in your monthly report, not buried in a dashboard.

  4. Step 4

    Reporting & revision

Each month you see what was done and what it moved. When something is not working, we change it rather than wait for it to come good.

FAQ

Straight answers to the usual questions

How do I optimise a Shopify product page for SEO?

Give it a descriptive product title, edit the page title and meta description in the search engine listing section, replace the manufacturer’s description with your own, add compressed images with accurate alt text, put specifications on the page as text, collect genuine reviews and check the product schema is valid. Then make sure the page is linked from its collection and loads quickly.

Do I need to write a unique description for every product?

Ideally yes, practically no. Start with the products that produce most of your revenue and the ones already close to page one in Search Console, and write those properly. For the long tail, a well-structured template with accurate product details is acceptable. What does not work is thousands of pages carrying the same supplier text as every other retailer.

Does Shopify add product schema automatically?

Most current themes include Product structured data, but it is often incomplete. Common gaps are brand, GTIN or MPN, variant-level price and availability, and review ratings. Review apps frequently add a second, conflicting block. Test a few product URLs in Google’s Rich Results Test and check the Merchant listings report in Search Console for errors.

What should I do with out-of-stock products on Shopify?

If the product will return, leave the page live, show it as unavailable and offer an email alert, so it keeps its rankings. If it is permanently discontinued and the page has traffic or backlinks, redirect it to the nearest equivalent product or the parent collection. Only let a product page 404 if it has no search value at all.

Are Shopify SEO apps worth it?

Sometimes, for bulk editing on large catalogues. Most of their features duplicate things you can already do in the Shopify admin or the theme, and every app adds code to your pages. We would rather fix the theme once than install an app to patch it, and we remove more SEO apps than we add.

Should each product variant have its own page?

Usually not. Sizes and colours of one product belong on a single page with variants, which keeps reviews and link value together. A separate product page makes sense only where people search specifically for that variant and you can give it its own images and description. Otherwise you create thin near-duplicates that compete with each other.
